Who we are

The Critical Law Students Heidelberg are a left-wing critical initiative in the field of legal education.

We are a non-partisan, non-hierarchical group of young law students. Together we want to reflect on the social and political aspects of law and promote a critical and responsible approach to law. This also includes an interdisciplinary perspective on social questions and problems and the elaboration of their significance for jurisprudence.

We work both in plenary sessions and in working groups and plan workshops, discussions or lectures, exchange ideas and take a stand on current legal policy issues. We are members of the Federal Association of Critical Law Groups.

We meet every second Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Study Room 1 of the Law Seminar.

Questions about the weekly rhythm or our work can be sent by E-mail to kritjurhd@riseup.net.

We can also be reached via our social media platforms, preferably Instagram.

Goals and Topics

We are united by the goal of creating a platform for discourse on legal topics that go beyond the compulsory university curriculum. In doing so, we also criticize the legal education system in order to achieve sustainable improvements for all students. In particular, we reject the orientation of legal education towards economically exploitative interests and the promotion of performance pressure among students by educators. Our goal is to enable barrier- and discrimination-free studies for all at the Faculty of Law.

We stand up against any form of group-related discrimination and hate and oppose, for example, anti-Semitism, racism, sexism, trans- and homophobia as well as social exclusion.

We take a feminist view of law and legal structures. Therefore, we work against anti-women* structures in everyday university life as well as in legal practice and want to use our work with the goal of overcoming outdated gender roles and patriarchal (power) structures.

We advocate for an anti-fascist society as well as the defense and expansion of democratic rights and freedoms. In the legal field, this includes in particular the reappraisal of injustice as well as an advocacy against state surveillance and repression measures.

Climate justice and climate protection are a part of our agenda.

In order to achieve these political goals, we also cooperate and network with other groups that are committed to the same goals.

Semester Topic

Every semester we deal more intensively with a specific topic and organize events on it. In the past we focused on the welfare state principle or queerness, e.g.
Our current semester topic in the winter semester 2022/2023 is colonialism in law.
